How Speaking in Tongues Can Help You Turn the World Around

There is tremendous power in the gift of tongues- the power to change the course of nature. When a thousand evil forces are working against the sons of God to deter or detour their purpose, speaking in tongues can realign your steps and ensure the fulfillment of God’s will for our lives– yes, your life, and those of others around you!

It is common to think of oppositions as the work of other humans, but one needs to remember that it isn’t the flesh that we are fighting against, but spiritual forces of darkness.

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

(Ephesians 6:12)

Can a Human Stand Against a Spirit? Yes, Jesus Did!

Man, in his own strength, can’t do anything against spiritual forces which are a gazillion times more powerful than mere mortals. Even Hollywood teaches us that- think of all the supernatural movies you have ever seen. From batman to superman, every superhero was the creation of a need to fight supernatural evil that no mortal could stand against.

Isn’t it surprising how we are more willing to believe the “Marvel” characters than the living, breathing word of God?!

Jesus is the only real-life superhero who gave His life to win eternal victory over Satan and all his cohorts. He has crushed the forces of darkness and defeated death through His resurrection. (Colossians 2:15)

But the most amazing part is, like superman he didn’t come from another planet nor did He have a world-class lab like iron man. He didn’t experience chemical reactions that made him green and gigantic like the hulk.

Yet throughout His public ministry, Jesus healed the sick, fed the multitudes, and raised the dead- all while being a human! He was born like you and me- grew all the way from an infant to an adult- went through everything a normal human would go through- and yet He accomplished way more than most would in a lifetime!

All by the power (dunamis) of the Holy Spirit!

So, Where Does Speaking in Tongues Come in All of This?

The Greek word for power, “dunamis” appears 120 times in the New Testament. It is the miracle working power that Jesus demonstrated during His time on earth.

Before ascending to heaven, He told His disciples-

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

(Acts 1:8)

The word ‘power’ here is again the term ‘dunamis’.

When on Pentecost Sunday, while the disciples were all gathered and praying in the upper room,

“what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.”

(Acts 2:3-4)

They started speaking in tongues!

Note that Jesus had asked the disciples to wait until the baptism of the Holy Spirit before they went out and testified about His death, burial and resurrection to the rest of the world.

Speaking in tongues shouldn’t be confused with salvation. When you believe in Jesus and accept Him as your lord and savior, you are translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13).

You can be a believer all your life without ever speaking in tongues and that in no way affects your relationship with God. But, to become powerful witnesses to others and to manifest the same “dunamis” that Jesus did in His earthly ministry- we need the Holy Spirit on us (baptism) and not just in us (salvation).

Turn the World Around with the Gift of Tongues

No matter how I write it, the experience of speaking in tongues and the aftereffects are personalized to each individual. What I see, experience, and am led to do will be completely different from your experience and leading. This is why the word says- “ as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability” (Acts 2:4)

But the truth remains- throughout the book of Acts, you will read multiple accounts of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and people speaking in tongues. The book of Acts accounts for the beginning of Christianity- the picture of what church life was when led by the Spirit of God, the sons of God accomplished feats that labeled them as nation shakers, the ones who turned the world upside down! (Acts 17:6)
